St. John International University (SJIU), together with Cairo University, is holding a workshop on Sustainable Design. The main scope is to find that difficult balance between architecture, technology, and nature through a real sustainable approach to the environment.
Our goal is to create teams able to design buildings composed of three important elements: sensitivity to different cultures, efficient technical solutions, and respect for the environment, both nature and people.
The workshop will take place in Vinovo (Torino) over three weeks, from July 4th to July 22nd (9AM to 7PM), and will consist of both theoretical lectures and design studios with participants involved in continuous brainstorming and design sessions focused on real case studies. Two professors from SJIU and three professors from Cairo University will conduct the lectures and design studio during the first two weeks.

Partners

The workshop is conceived by St. John International University,

Courses

Lectures ( Total of 15 hours):

  • Design and Sustainability
  • Technologies and Sustainability
  • The Process of Implementation

Design studio (Total of 75 Hours):

  • Sustainable Design Thinking
  • Integrated Design System
  • Smart, Green and Sustainable Techniques

In the third week, participants will focus on Piazza Crispi and design solutions for its renovation under the guidance of visiting international architects. Piazza Crispi is now a crucial point for the renovation of the north side of Torino. It represents one of the nodes of the edge, of the boundary where the old city texture melts into the new urban developments of the last century. Once a vibrant square for commercial activities, in the last decades Piazza Crispi has lost importance and became an unsafe corner of the city. Now the purpose is to revitalize it, to foster new life and motion and to design a covered market characterized by sustainable and energy-efficient solutions. The best designs produced during the workshop will be presented to the City Council and used to stimulate interest among public and private investors.

Locations

Torino

Students will appreciate in their spare time the city of:
Turin, the major business and cultural centre in northern Italy, capital of the Piedmont region, located mainly on the left bank of the Po River surrounded by the Alpine arch. The population of the city is 909,193 while the Turin metropolitan area is 2.2 million.
The city has a rich culture and history, and is known for its numerous art galleries, restaurants, churches, palaces, operahouses, piazzas, parks, gardens, theatres, libraries, museums and other venues. Turin is well-known for its baroque, rococo, neo-classical, and Art Nouveau architecture.
The city currently hosts some of Italy's best universities and academies, important museums, such as the Museo Egizio and the Mole Antonellian. Turin's several monuments and sights make it one of the world's top 250 tourist destinations, and the tenth most visited city in Italy.
Turin is well known as the home of the Shroud of Turin, the football teams Juventus and Torino, the headquarters of automobile manufacturers Fiat, Lancia and Alfa Romeo, and as host of the 2006 Winter Olympics. [wikipedia]
Vinovo

The lessons and the studio will be hosted in:
the SJIU's castle campus located in Vinovo – about 10 miles from Torino’s city center. Originally built in 1510, the Della Rovere castle was built for Cardinal Della Rovere. The castle’s main floor features priceless artwork including frescoes by Pintoricchio, rare examples of Renaissance terracotta, mosaic floors, and original Baroque stuccowork and ceiling paintings.
The structure is currently undergoing some restoration and once completed the campus will have over 54,000 ft2 dedicated to faculty, staff and student use. The SJIU campus also has access to a cinema with a capacity of 480 people, swimming pool, soccer fields, park, and canoeing. The restored campus will feature a cafeteria, coffee shop, computer labs, library and large reading room. There will be approximately 20 classrooms in addition to administrative and faculty offices.
The entire campus is equipped with WI-FI for faculty, students and staff. The SJIU campus is conveniently reachable from Torino by bus (a 20-40 min. ride depending on origin point).
Centro del Design

In the first and second weeks of the workshop, students will focus on sustainable architecture.
The building will be located in the south of Turin, in the western border of the Fiat Mirafiori —emblematic place in the history and evolution of industrial production dynamics of Northern Italy. In the same area, a new Centre of Design has recently opened which consists of six large buildings designed for teaching and research (classrooms, laboratories, departments, offices, lounges).
Piazza Crispi

In the third week, participants will focus on Piazza Crispi, a square in the north of Torino, located along the road network to Milan. The Crispi public square was created at the end of the nineteenth century and was the location of the city toll gates from 1853 until 1912.  The square took on great importance in the social history of this area of Torino particularly during the labor movement. However, in the last decades, Piazza Crispi has lost importance and has become an unsafe corner of the city. Now the purpose is to revitalize it, to foster new life and motion and to design a covered market characterized by sustainable and energy-efficient solutions

Professors

To lead the workshop teams during the third week SJIU has invited:

  • Adam Greenspan, Partner, PWP, San Francisco, USA

The organization of the workshop has been provided by:
Giuliano Pairone has a degree in Architectural Engineering, with a specialization in Architecture, from the Turin Polytechnic in 1999 and immediately started working for the Architecture Group of FiatEngineering and Marco Visconti. Among the projects with which he was involved are the Giovanni and Marella Agnelli Pinacoteca, designed by Renzo Piano, the new Faculty of Political Science and Law in collaboration with Norman Foster and the restyling of the Turin Alpi Stadium.
From 2003 to 2004 he moved to London to obtain a Master in Bioclimatic Architecture from ‘The Bartlett Faculty of the Built Environment’, University College London.
Upon completing his specialization, he returns to the Italian project and design team, and works on the New Ferrari Meccanica and Ferrari Painting Workshops, focusing on bioclimatic and energy conservation strategies.
In 2007, he became a parter and director at MDN, then AEDAS Visconti & Partners, where he had the opportunity to continue his research in sustainable architecture, designed for man, where new technologies and a careful balance of natural resources generate solutions and buildings which are in harmony with nature. In his role as partner and lead architect, he was responsible for many new projects for the studio, such as the restyling of the International Autodrome in Mugello, the new Ferrari restaurant and the Space Center in Abu Dhabi.
Since 2009 he is partner, together with Donatella Chiaruttini, of CP_A.
Alessandro Grella has a PhD in Environment and Territory: Spatial Planning and Local Development from Politecnico di Torino. He earned his Master's Degree in Architecture in 2005 and has since collaborated as researcher with Department Interateneo Territorio, IRES Piemonte and SiTI Istituto Superiore sui Sistemi Territoriali per l'Innovazione. Alessandro is a founding member of Izmo cultural association. He is currently lecturer at St. John International University.
Their area of research are Information and Communication Technologies in the planning and participatory processes.
Continue to pursue his passions: urban design, architecture and design.
