The subway ("la metropolitana") in Torino has one line which connects the two major train stations of the city with the west end of town. It does not, however, run through the historic center.
Once in the historic center, most of the major monuments of Torino can be seen fairly easily on foot. There are numerous bus, tram and subway lines that connect various sites within the city and also reach larger shopping centers on the outskirts. Tickets can be purchased in tabacchi stores, cafes or GTT (Torino transportation) offices. You must get on board with a valid ticket, punch it in the machine and keep it during the ride and show it, if requested, to the ticket inspectors. A 70-minute ticket costs 0.90 Euro and monthly student passes are available for 18 Euros.

Bicycle is also a popular mode of transportation in the center since the city is flat and traffic is relatively light. In Valentino Park, Pellerina Park and Colletta Park it is possible to rent bikes for a few hours, the weekend, or even for a month between May and September. Another spot to rent bikes is in the city center in Vittorio Veneto square. Click here for a map of cycle lanes in the city.
While taxis can sometimes be hailed in the city center, it is certainly easier to call by phone and request one. The meter starts approximately at 2-4 Euro; there are supplements for night service (10:00pm-7:00am) and on Sundays and holidays as well as for each piece of baggage.
Avoid unmarked or unmetered cabs (numerous at airports and train stations), whose drivers actively solicit your trade and may demand astronomical fares. Use only licensed, metered yellow or white cabs, identified by a numbered shield on the side and an illuminated taxi sign on the roof.
For a taxi call:
Pronto Taxi: 011 5737
Radio Taxi: 011 5730/3399
Give the operator the address where you want to be picked up; do your best to pronounce the address as clearly as possible. If you stay on the line, the operator will often give you the name and the number of the car and the estimated arrival time of the car (3 minuti). Then hang up and wait for the taxi to arrive. Note that taxis cannot be reserved in advance.
