Passports

All students are required to have a valid passport. Without a valid passport students will not be able to submit an application for a Student Visa. It is important to remember that the processing time may take weeks or months, therefore students are advised to apply for their passport immediately. It is also useful to make several photocopies of the front page of the passport, with the picture and signature, to be carried with the student. These will be important in the event the passport is lost or stolen.

Student Visas

Visas are issued exclusively by the Italian Consulates and Embassies in the student's home country.  In our experience, students are required to obtain a Student Visa for semester and year programs (those lasting 90 days or more). For summer programs lasting less than 90 days, SJIU strongly advised students to inquire with the appropriate Italian Consulate well in advance of their departure for up-to-date Student Visa regulations.

Please note: Visa requirements and regulations change often and may vary from consulate to consulate.; it is the student's responsibility to inform themselves and obtain a Student Visa if necessary.

U.S. students are generally required to deal with the consulate which has jurisdiction over their state of permanent residence. SJIU staff is experienced in visa matters and is available to guide students through the process; however, they are NOT affiliated with the consulates and are NOT able to intervene in dealings with consulates.

After a student has enrolled in SJIU and paid all course fees, they will receive an official SJIU Enrollment Letter which they may use to obtain their Student Visa.

Permit of Stay (Permesso di Soggiorno)

Upon arrival in Torino, all students, including E.U. citizens, must register with the local authorities (Questura). Semester and year students will apply for a  Permit to Stay document (Permesso di Soggiorno per Studio). SJIU will help students through all steps in the application process, but it is the student's responsibility to first obtain a Student Visa from the Italian Consulate in their home country.

The documents to be provided  for the Permit of Stay are many of the same ones that students provide for the Italian Consulate when applying for the Visa. It is strongly advised that students prepare the necessary photocopyes BEFORE their arrival in Italy, since the Permit of Stay application will be completed immediately upon arrival during Orientation.

The following documentation is required for the Permit to Stay apllication:

freccina_rossa Photocopies of the entire passport (every page, even blanks ones)
freccina_rossa Photocopy of international health insurance proof of coverage
freccina_rossa Photocopy of official SJIU Enrollment Letter, stamped bi the Italian consulate
