Activities in Torino

Art, Architecture and Museums

Today, Torino's architecture is a most impressive sight upon arrival in the city. Torino is a city of Baroque and Art Nouveau style architecture but also of the new infrastructures and works of art that enriched the area during the 2006 Winter Olympic Games. These works were undertaken by architects of worldwide fame such as Renzo Piano, Arate Isozaki and Gae Aulenti. Art, both ancient and contemporary, is a central feature in Torino. The city is home to the Egyptian Museum, the second most important in the world next to that of Cairo. Other important galleries and museums are the Modern Art Gallery and the Contemporary Art Museum inside Rivoli Castle just to list a few. Torino is also the birth place of Arte Povera.

Music, Cinema and Food

For centuries Torino has been a city where classical culture and scientific innovation have gone hand in hand. The movie "Cabiria" gave birth to Italian cinema in Torino and Italian television made its first steps here as well. Today, thanks to the Film Commission, many film sets can be seen throughout the city as well as the Cinema Museum, located in the Mole Antonelliana, designed by the Swiss Architect François Confino. Today Torino is once again becoming one of the capital cities of the "big screen". The classical music festival (September Music), the pop music festival (Traffic Free Festival), the contemporary dance festival (Festival Torinodanza), the Torino Film Festival, the Book Festival (one of the most important events in the publishing world) are only a few examples of happenings offered in the city. Culture, in a city like Torino, also means food: the culture of good food has found its perfect expression in the high quality of products of the Piedmont region. It is not by chance that the "Salone del Gusto", organized by Slow Food, attracts thousands of visitors from around the world.

Sports Activities

There is a wide choice of sports complexes in Torino as well as the possibility to practice many different sport activities. Piedmont, boasting 53 ski resorts and 1,300 kilometers of ski slopes, is the ideal destination for winter sports enthusiasts. Students can find facilities for wall climbing and can also make excursions on snow-topped mountains. There are also ideal locations for horseback riding and archery. For students who love to row, there are plenty of rowing clubs along the Po river. In Piedmont there are also beautiful golf greens open 6 months out of the year. Every year there is Torino Marathon, a prestigious 42K race which can be classified as one of the most important marathons, comparable to those of New York, London, Berlin and Paris. Torino is also famous worldwide for its two important soccer teams: Juventus and Torino. Watching a soccer match in the company of Italians could be a fun way to get to know another side of Italian culture.

Musical Activities

Students will be able to take part in the musical activities organized at SJIU. This space is available for those who wish to take part in classical and jazz formations, the SJIU chorus, rock groups, or receive private music lessons. These lessons can be arranged for any interested students upon request to SJIU’s staff. A space in the SJIU building is reserved for musical practice, rehearsal and private lessons. This space includes a piano, music stands, some musical scores as well as other musical equipment. Concerts will be also held regularly during the year and students are invited and encouraged to participate.
