St. John International University (SJIU) is a new American free-standing university in Vinovo-Torino (Turin), Italy. SJIU offers study abroad, undergraduate and graduate degree programs in the areas of art history, business administration, environmental architecture, environmental studies and film studies. SJIU’s staff is trained for emergency procedures and can be reached 24 hours a day in case of serious or urgent matters. SJIU provides students with information for seeking medical attention when necessary. This information includes addresses and phone numbers of local, English-speaking doctors, hospitals and pharmacies.

Health Insurance
Italian law requires that all foreign students living in Italy have medical insurance, either through the Italian national insurance plan or through a private insurance company. SJIU staff is available to assist students in finding an appropriate insurance plan or students may choose to take part in SJIU’s student health insurance plan for an additional fee. SJIU’s student insurance plan does not include treatment in countries other than Italy.

Doctor Visits
SJIU’s staff is always available to assist students in making an appointment with an English-speaking doctor. Italian doctors do not accept overseas payments from insurance companies and students will be asked to pay up-front for the visit. Doctors will provide students with receipts/invoices in order to be reimbursed by their insurance company back home.

Prescription Medication
It is impossible to have medication mailed from abroad as it will be stopped at customs. Students should bring enough of their prescription medication with them to last their entire stay in Torino (this is also true for contact lenses, favorite over-the-counter cold and allergy medicines and vitamins). Foreign prescriptions will not be honored in Italy. If students need a prescription while abroad, they will have to see an Italian doctor and have a new prescription written (with the generic name of the medicine). Students will also be asked to pay the full market price and may be reimbursed by their insurance company later. Students and parents should bear in mind that not all medications are available.
