St. John International University was chartered on June 29, 2009 by an Act of the New Hampshire State Legislature. This Charter was only the second such legal recognition granted to an American university specifically established and authorized to deliver approved degree programs in an international setting.
On March 8, 2008, the State of New Hampshire’s regulatory approval, oversight, and quality assurance agency for all institutions of higher education, the New Hampshire Postsecondary Education Commission (NHPEC), granted approval to St. John International University to offer and, upon a student’s successful completion, confer the following degrees:
The acts of New Hampshire’s Legislature and Postsecondary Education Commission established St. John International University as the first and only American university in Italy authorized and approved to award graduate degrees.
The University is now engaged in the process of securing national (U.S.) accreditation for all degree programs. Unlike, the authorization and approval of degree programs, such as that bestowed upon SJIU by the New Hampshire Postsecondary Education Commission (which is required of all reputable American colleges and universities), national and regional accreditation is a voluntary action on behalf of the University. It is an activity that St. John International University welcomes to further its mission.
In August of 2009, Mrs. Lorenzina Zampedri (Chair of the Board of Directors), Fr. Jonathan DeFelice, O.S.B. (Board Member), Prof. Piero Ceria (President) and Prof. Dennis Bava (Provost) attended an official signing ceremony in Concord, New Hampshire. Joining the SJIU delegation at the ceremony were Governor John Lynch, as well as two recently appointed members of the University’s Board of Directors, Senator Lou D’Allesandro and Senator Sylvia Larsen.
