George Hagerty was appointed as the President of St. John International University by the University’s Board of Trustees in June of 2011. Dr. Hagerty, an internationally recognized and respected educator and policymaker, also holds academic appointment at SJIU as University Professor. As is his custom, he intends at St. John International to frequent the campus setting from which he draws his greatest inspiration: the classroom.
Prior to his arrival at the University, President Hagerty served as the Provost and University Professor at Hellenic American University in Athens, Greece. He is also President-emeritus of Franklin Pierce University in New Hampshire, in recognition of his fourteen years of leadership and service as President during a time of significant institutional transformation and growth (1995-2009). At Franklin Pierce, Hagerty also held academic appointment as Professor of Political Science and Education, and frequently taught a course on U.S. Social Policy.
Prior to his tenure at Franklin Pierce, Dr. Hagerty served as the Corporate Vice President and Senior Partner of TCI/Taylor, Hagerty & Associates, a Washington, DC-based firm that provided legislative and finance counsel to government agencies, institutions of higher education, and other non-profit organizations. As an academic, Dr. Hagerty served in both faculty and administrative posts at his alma maters — Stonehill College (1985-95) and Harvard University (1991-96). His teaching, research, and writing were focused on government, education policy and finance, and management. He received his bachelor's degree in International Affairs from Stonehill College and his master's and doctoral degrees in Administration, Planning, and Social Policy from the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
Early in his career, President Hagerty was selected as a Post-doctoral Fellow at the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare. After completing his fellowship, he was appointed to a series of posts in the newly created U.S. Department of Education, culminating in his appointment as Chief of Compliance and Enforcement in the Office of Special Education Programs. Since leaving Federal service, Hagerty has been counsel to both Democratic and Republican Administrations on issues related to education, federal-state relations, and public finance.
His Board service reflects a continuing commitment to education, public service, and institutional accountability. Prominent among his governing board service is his election as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (NAICU), as well as Chair of the Presidents' Council of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA-Division II), including appointment to the Association's Executive Board. He also served on the Board of the American Council on Education (ACE) and was appointed to the Council's Commission on Leadership and Institutional Effectiveness. Hagerty was named to the Board of Directors of the New England Council and served on the Board of Trustees of Tuition Plan, Inc., the national prepaid tuition program for private colleges and universities. He was Chairman of the New Hampshire Postsecondary Education Commission, served as Chairman of the Board of the Granite State's Political Library (recipient of the 2005 New Englander of the Year Award), and was the Chairman of the New Hampshire College and University Council (NHCUC), as well as Chairman of Campus Compact for New Hampshire (CCNH).
He is the author of numerous scholarly articles, book chapters, and policy papers on a range of subjects relating to education and public finance.
